Dr. Eloise Ryan

Eloise has an active role in advancing the Water Industry in NZ, through her work supporting National Policy Statements, conducting scientific research and as an honorary lecturer.

Eloise joined 4Sight in September 2022 as a Principal Water Quality Scientist in the Ecology Team, based in our Hamilton office. Her role provides technical and expert advice on water monitoring, assesses the effects of discharges to aquatic environments, along with analysing water quality data.

Eloise has performed roles in the energy sector, academia and also for local Government. She was previously a Senior Scientist of Water Quality at Waikato Regional Council, managing State of Environment and Recreational Monitoring Programmes and conducting scientific research into important freshwater issues. Her experience also includes being an Environmental Scientist for Genesis Energy, specialising in water treatment and discharges, and consent acquisition to support power generation. During her career, Eloise has provided information to support freshwater policy decisions and implementation of policy and plans, including the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management and RMA processes.

In the field, Eloise has a wide breath of expertise, through her five years’ experience working on boats in lakes for her PhD, Postdoctoral Research and University appointment positions. She also has experience working on power station sites, sampling water streams – cooling water, stormwater, process water, river water, and also rivers/streams for seven years at Council.  She is also a skilled taxonomist at identifying algae, bacteria, sewage fungus and invertebrates.

Eloise’s qualifications include a Doctor of Philosophy in Freshwater Sciences, Master of Science in Freshwater Sciences and a BSc in Marine Sciences, all from The University of Waikato.

In addition to her work at 4Sight, Eloise is an honorary lecturer at Waikato University, providing annual lectures on environmental monitoring techniques and Freshwater Ecology, and is a trained accredited Hearings Commissioner.

With a love of being in and on the water, developing a career in the Water industry was a natural choice.  She embraces the exciting opportunities to develop and oversee recreational monitoring programmes, monitor and assess the state of rivers and lakes, together with providing expert advice on water contamination events relating to breaches of the RMA and resource consent assessments.

Outside of her role, Eloise is a ballet dancer, training five nights a week with two different ballet schools. She also does lots of cross-training, pilates and yoga. Learning new choreography most nights helps her keep her brain active for her job!

Above all else, Eloise is a mum to two active children, so she is often manging sport teams and going to events.
