4Sight was engaged by the Northland Development Corporation to provide landscape architecture, ecological and urban design input into the public, private and semi-public spaces of a new hotel and entertainment precinct in Whāngārei.

The project team delivered a design that created a locally identifiable ecological and cultural narrative that reflects the ecology of the area as well as respecting the iwi heritage by incorporating the Rongoā species and cultural wayfinding symbols.

We believe it will be a space for locals and tourists to celebrate Whāngārei and Northland and a destination that connects visitors to the CBD. The landscape spaces, including the new Plaza, will provide a recreation space which we hope will engage the community, and tourists, to the cultural and natural history of the area. It will be a vibrant, thriving place that reflects the movement of the Hātea River and celebrates Parihaka mountain/maunga, and ultimately, a place for people to gather, mingle and eat.
